Winter Is Coming: Help With Heating Bills Is Just a Phone Call Away

Even though the metro area has seen warmer-than-usual temperatures this fall, colder days are ahead. Winter officially begins on Sunday, December 21, and when temperatures drop, heating bills often rise right along with them.

That’s why residents are encouraged to apply for the Colorado Low-income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP), which is now accepting applications for the 2025–26 season through April 30, 2026.

What is LEAP?

LEAP is a federally funded program that helps Colorado families, seniors, and individuals pay part of their winter heating costs. The program doesn’t cover the full bill, but it can significantly ease the burden during the coldest months of the year.

LEAP assistance is available during the winter heating season, which runs from November through April. In most cases, approved benefits are sent directly to your heating company, not to the applicant. You’ll receive a notice letting you know how much help you’re getting.

In some situations, LEAP can also help pay for repairs or replacement of a home’s main heating system, such as a furnace or wood-burning stove. The program does not cover portable or temporary heaters.

Who qualifies? Households earning up to 60% of Colorado’s state median income may be eligible. Benefit amounts depend on factors like household income and the cost of the primary heating fuel.

How to apply - Applications are accepted from November through April each year. Help is available to guide you through the process, including a checklist of what you’ll need to apply.

If you need help outside of the regular LEAP season, assistance may still be available. Call 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435) for more information.

Have questions? LEAP representatives can answer common questions about where to send applications, how long processing takes, and whether you can apply if you’re enrolled in other assistance programs.

If you received a LEAP application by mail, use the return envelope provided. Otherwise, call 1-866-HEAT-HELP to find the correct mailing address for your county.

As winter approaches, residents are encouraged not to wait. Applying early can help ensure warmth, comfort, and peace of mind when temperatures start to fall.
