Summary
The ultimate game of the year is set to kick off this Sunday in Santa Clara, California, as the New England Patriots host the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX. It is a rematch of Super Bowl 49, played 11 years ago, when a Russell Wilson interception at the goal line gave the Patriots a 28-24 win. The loss for Seattle was a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance after they won Super Bowl 48 over the Denver Broncos; they have not made it back since then, until now.
New England has returned to the Super Bowl three times since then, winning all three. The Patriots are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most Super Bowl wins with six. Making their first appearance since 2019, the Patriots look to break the all-time record for most Super Bowl wins in NFL history. Seattle will be going for its second overall championship.
Both teams finished the regular season with a 14-3 record, with Seattle earning the NFC’s number one seed. New England was the number two seed in the AFC and beat the number one seed Denver Broncos (also 14-3) in the AFC Championship Game. The Seahawks advance to the Super Bowl after beating the LA Rams 31-27 in the NFC Championship Game.
Both teams were relative surprises to make it to the final game of the season. New England went from worst to first in one season, going from a 4-13 record to a 14-3 record with their new coach and former Patriot player, Mike Vrabel. They are led by second-year quarterback Drake Maye, the third overall pick in the 2024 Draft. Maye is one of the front-runners for the 2025 MVP award and also received his second Pro Bowl nod.
The Seahawks are under their second-year Head Coach, Mike Macdonald, who is 24-10 in his first two seasons. Sam Darnold will be at the quarterback position for Seattle. Like Maye, he was a third overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was chosen as a Pro Bowl selection in both 2024 and 2025. His breakout season came in 2024, when he led the Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs before joining the Seahawks. The Seahawks went from 10-7 to 14-3 with Darnold at quarterback.
Formerly with the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, San Francisco 49ers, and the Vikings, Darnold is 0-4 against New England, throwing for just 691 yards with nine interceptions and one touchdown. But the Seahawks are 4.5-point favorites over the Patriots in Sunday’s big game.
The Apple Music halftime show will feature recording artist and international superstar Bad Bunny. The Puerto Rican native just won three Grammys during Sunday’s awards, including Album of the Year, Best Música Urbana Album, and Best Global Music Performance. Charlie Puth will sing the national anthem, and Coco Jones will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
The game will be played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, at 4:30 PM MT. The weather is expected to be partly cloudy, with a high of 66 degrees.
