Rockies Avoid Historic Collapse, Prospect Shines

In a league that is 149 years old, it is not desirable to achieve a record that has never been done before, and is one that you cannot celebrate. But, the Rockies did celebrate a win that kept them from being a team with the worst start to a season in 149 years. With a victory that closed out the month of April and a win that opened up the month of May, the Colorado Rockies avoided such a mark. A 2-1 victory over the Atlanta Braves moved the Rockies to 5-25, tied with the 1932 Red Sox and 1952 Pirates for the second-worst 30-game start to an MLB season since 1900. The 1988 Orioles were one game worse.

The Rockies 30 30-game mark came during the home stand and celebrated 30 years at Coors Field. The 2-1 win over the Atlanta Braves closed that stand and ended an eight-game losing streak. Chase Dollander was on the mound against Cy Young Award-winning pitcher Chris Sale. Dollander, 23, is the Rockies’ No. 1 rated prospect, and number 23 overall in Major League Baseball.

“Chase is built the right way,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “This is a great confidence-builder – going up against Chris Sale, a Cy Young Award winner. And he basically out dueled him.”

Not only pitching for the win in what turned out as a pitching duel, Dollander gave up just two hits in 5 2/3 innings before being replaced due to a cracked fingernail. The win not only rallied the team but also

The 29,661 in attendance at Coors Field blocked the averted negative history.

“You guys can probably hear it now – we’re in pretty good spirits,” Dollander said after the game. “I would not say that we were down in the locker room. Obviously, losing is not fun. But at the same time, we know that we’re capable of winning, and we haven’t put a winning product on the field. So that’s exactly what we did today.”

With an important victory in the books, the Rockies didn’t stop. They hit the road and notched their second straight victory with a series-opening win against the San Francisco Giants, in a 4-3 win at Oracle Park. It was the first time the Rockies posted back-to-back wins for the 2025 season.

In the win against the division rival Giants, Kyle Freeland would set a franchise record for the Rockies with his 207th start for the franchise, a team record. Freeland did not get the win since he exited the game while the Rockies were trailing, but he shared in the celebration.

“Growing up as a kid in Denver, I never even thought I’d be playing for the Rockies, let alone being at the top of a lot of the leaderboards with this organization,” Freeland said. “I wear that with honor, being able to be a part of this organization for so long, to create those milestones for myself. I couldn’t do it without my teammates and family around me.

“It’s truly an accomplishment that I’m able to be very happy about. [I can] look back at how long of a career I’ve had so far at this point, and know that I’ve done a lot of good things with this organization, and hope to continue to do them.”

Freeland was drafted by the Rockies in 2014 and has spent his entire career in Denver. He will celebrate his 32nd birthday next Wednesday, May 14th. Through 212 games played, Freeland’s record is 60-77, with an ERA of 4.52.
