The Colorado Rockies find a way to outdo themselves negatively with each game and series. In the worst start in franchise history, the Rockies find new ways to underachieve in their 4-18 start, which is the worst in Major League Baseball. After losing nine of their last 10 games, a search for positives is hard to come by, but four of their last five losses were each one-run defeats. Although the past week has shown some fight for the Rockies, the results are still losses, with their previous three series ending in sweeps.

Their last home stand started with a snowed-out game last Friday. That turned Sunday into a double-header at Coors Field. The Saturday game was a valiant effort for the Rockies in a nail bitter against the Washington Nationals. They mounted a furious comeback, scoring eight runs in the seventh inning. They fell short by one run, losing to the Nat’s, 12-11. They would go on to lose both games in the Sunday matinee to complete their consecutive third sweep for April.

Hitting the road on Tuesday for a short three-game series against the Kansas City Royals, the Rockies fought back again. It took 11 innings before the Royals won in a 4-3 victory on a walk-off single by catcher Freddy Fermin to cap the victory. The Rockies had a chance to put the game away with a bases-loaded, three-run double by Jacob Stallings, putting them up 3-2 in the ninth. Even with another chance with runners in scoring position, the Rocky’s Mickey Moniak was picked off at third base and thrown out by Fermin.

“We’ve been in the last five games,” Moniak said. “The losses were decided by one run and the game we won [3-1 over the Nationals on Sunday], we won by two. We’ve been in close games. It obviously sucks to be on the losing end, but these are learning moments. There’s a lot of stuff to learn to make sure that we are on the winning end.”

With the loss, the Rockies sink to 1-12 on the road for the 2025 season, which ranks third worst in franchise history. Their only road win came in the second game of the season on March 29 in a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Last weekend, in their road series against the San Diego Padres, the Rockies were swept in three games without scoring any runs, a franchise first.

The Rockies will return to Coors Field on Friday for a six-game home stand, with three games against the Cincinnati Reds, followed by the Atlanta Braves starting Monday. Saturday afternoon’s game against the Reds will be the official 30th Anniversary of Coors Field.

The celebration on Saturday will feature 1990s themes, music, a limited-edition Dante Bichette Rockies t-shirt, and the first pitch thrown by Dante Bichette of the original Blake Street Bombers. It commemorates the 30th anniversary of Coors Field’s inaugural game on April 26, 1995, which ended with Bichette’s walk-off home run in the 14th inning against the New York Mets.
