Since 1981, the Noel Distinguished Visiting Professorship has brought extraordinary voices from across the nation—journalists, artists, public thinkers, and changemakers—to Denver. Each year, these guests spark real conversations about equity, democracy, and social justice, inviting reflection, learning, and growth across the community.
The 2026 visiting professor, Nikole Hannah-Jones, is widely recognized for visionary work on The 1619 Project, including the acclaimed book “The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story.” This groundbreaking initiative has challenged and inspired a nation. Through in-depth storytelling and research, Nikole Hannah-Jones illuminates the profound impact of Black Americans and offers an opportunity to reimagine American history.
On Tuesday, March 17, from 5:30 - 8:30 pm, the community will gather at Shorter Community AME Church for an uplifting keynote and the Hope for the Future Award ceremony. The evening honors those making a difference in education and social justice—a celebration for friends, neighbors, students, and leaders.
On Wednesday, March 18, Hannah-Jones shares lunch and conversation with student leaders at the Jordan Student Success Building, creating a moment for mentorship and inspiration. That afternoon, from 2:00 - 3:00 pm, Hannah-Jones addresses students, educators, and community members at St. Cajetan’s Center, weaving stories and wisdom to inspire attendees.
For years, the Rachel B. Noel events have served as a beloved tradition at MSU Denver—a bridge between campus and community, and a heartfelt celebration of the courage and compassion that helped shape Colorado’s history.
