Cold Start for Rockies Opening Stand

The thrill and excitement of Opening Day in Major League Baseball was a complete bust in Denver when it was the Colorado Rockies turn to start the home schedule last Friday. The Boys of Summer faced winter conditions: snow, wind, and rain. The Rockies’ cold opening matched the last-place team’s poor start.

After a 1-4 road trip to start the season, the sellout crowd who did show up at Coors Field braved the frigid temperatures to watch their team sink deeper into last place. It took 11 innings before the Rockies fell  6-3 to the Oakland Athletics. The 37 degrees at first pitch marked the second coldest day in Rockies franchise history. 2018 was the coldest on record at Coors when the Rockies faced Atlanta with 27 degrees on the field.

It wasn’t until the series’ final game that the Rockies got some relief with a 12-5 victory against the A’s to get their second win of the season. It was the premier start of Rockies top prospect Chase Dollander on the mound. The start for the highly anticipated pitcher was a success for the 23-year-old rookie. He recorded six strikeouts to get his first win in the majors.

“He did what he needed to do today to be the winning pitcher in a major-league game, which is what I stress to all of our starters, especially in this ballpark,” Black said. “This a tough place to pitch. But if you are determined, and if you have the will to be the starting pitcher in this ballpark, you’re going to be fine.”

The Rockies’ 2-8 start through the first 10 games ties for the worst start in franchise history, matching the records set by the 2005 and 2024 teams. Additionally, it is one of the worst starts in the 2025 season, alongside the Chicago White Sox and the Atlanta Braves.
