Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo and National Western Stock Show End Nearly 20-Year MLK Jr. Rodeo Partnership

Summary
On Saturday, October 25, the National Western Stock Show (NWSS) and the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR) announced they’ll be going their separate ways after nearly two decades of partnership. The two institutions — whose collaboration brought the MLK Jr. African American Heritage Rodeo of Champions to life — will transition to new paths beginning in 2026.
The annual rodeo, a beloved celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and the enduring contributions of African American cowboys and cowgirls, has long stood as a highlight of the National Western Stock Show.
Founded in 2006 by the late Lu Vason, the event was created to honor both heritage and history, spotlighting the Black riders, ropers, and ranchers who helped shape the American West.
“The National Western Stock Show is deeply appreciative of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo’s long-standing partnership and the strong foundation it helped build for this special event,” said Wes Allison, President & CEO of the Western Stock Show Association. “We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished together and look forward to continuing to honor Dr. King’s legacy through future collaborations.”
While scheduling conflicts prompted the change, both organizations expressed mutual respect and gratitude — emphasizing their continued commitment to celebrating African American excellence in the Western tradition.
“We’re grateful for nearly twenty years of partnership,” said Valeria Howard-Cunningham, President & CEO of BPIR. “The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo will always remain dedicated to celebrating and showcasing the extraordinary contributions of African Americans to the Western way of life.”
Beginning in 2026, the NWSS will continue hosting the MLK Jr. African American Heritage Rodeo with a new production partner, Black Rodeo USA (BRUSA), based in Phoenix, Arizona.
The 2026 MLK Jr. African American Heritage Rodeo takes place Monday, January 19, 2026, at 6:00 pm. inside the Denver Coliseum.
