After 17 years of dedicated service at Shorter Community AME Church in Denver, Rev. Dr. Timothy E. Tyler has been appointed to lead the historic First AME Church in Los Angeles, California. He and First Lady Dwinta Mosby Tyler will be embarking on this new chapter together.

Dr. Tyler began his pastoral journey at Shorter in 2008 and quickly became beloved for his inspiring preaching, passionate community activism, and deep commitment to justice. He played a prominent role in seeking justice for Marvin Booker, an unhoused Black man who died in police custody in 2010, standing alongside the Booker family and community leaders to call for transparency and accountability. As Dr. Tyler powerfully stated during the case, “If Marvin Booker can be killed in broad daylight, in front of witnesses, in a city jail, and there is no accountability, then none of us are safe.” His leadership has played a key role in shaping Shorter’s identity as a faith-driven force for positive change.

First Lady Dwinta Mosby Tyler is the founder and CEO of The Equity Project, LLC, a nationally recognized consulting firm dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Her impressive background in Human Resources and organizational strategy, along with her caring and insightful approach, has brought meaningful change to both faith and civic spaces.

At Shorter, her positive influence extended to the church’s leadership culture, social outreach, and community partnerships — bringing people together and bridging faith, public discourse, and social justice.

Dr. Tyler’s new appointment at First AME Church, Los Angeles — the oldest AME congregation on the West Coast — is now underway. While the Shorter AME and Denver communities mourn the loss of a beloved pastor, Los Angeles gains a dedicated and inspiring leader. This transition marks a significant moment for both congregations.

“They have led with vision, courage, and a deep sense of purpose,” said Denver Weekly News publisher, L. Alexander. “Los Angeles is truly blessed to welcome two devoted and inspiring servants of God.”
