Pastors, trustees, and church leaders: your church organization may qualify for significant funding to protect and restore your historic church building. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has launched the Preserving Black Churches grant program, a $60 million initiative offering grants ranging from $50,000 to $500,000 to help historically Black churches maintain their vital role in the community.

Eligible applicants include active or former congregations, their governing bodies such as trustees or church boards, as well as nonprofits and public agencies responsible for stewarding church buildings that are at least 50 years old, or 35 years old if the site has exceptional significance.

The grants can be used for capital repairs, planning, community programming, and strengthening the church’s capacity to serve. This program is designed to preserve churches that have long been centers of spiritual life, cultural heritage, and community activism.

Church organizations interested in applying must submit their applications by September 12, 2025, via the National Trust’s online grant portal. For full eligibility requirements and application details, visit:

This is a rare, once-in-a-generation chance for your church to secure funding to continue its mission for generations to come.
