16th Street Reopens with Summer Celebration

16th Street Reopens with Summer Celebration

Summary
Denver’s most iconic thoroughfare is making a grand return. Formerly known as the 16th Street Mall, the newly rebranded 16th Street has undergone a transformative redesign that hopefully breathes new life into the heart of downtown.
Initially established in 1982 by the esteemed architect I.M. Pei, the street has been modernized to provide a more walkable, accessible, and people-centered experience.
This project is part of a significant $172.5 million public investment that began in April 2022 under the leadership of Mayor Michael Hancock and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025, with Mayor Mike Johnston overseeing the final stages. While the initial timeline aimed for late 2024, unforeseen challenges arose with discovering historic underground utilities from the 1880s, necessitating careful restoration efforts.
The renovated corridor officially debuted in June 2024 and features new paving, enhanced green spaces, and gathering areas stretching from Union Station to Civic Center.
Denver is hosting the 16th Street Summer Kickoff to celebrate the project’s advancements. The public is invited to attend May 31 and June 1 from 11 am to 6 pm for various engaging activities, including Olympic-style speed climbing, a local artisan bazaar, live music, food trucks, a Skyline Beer Garden, and a Kids Adventure Zone.
This two-day celebration is free.
